The Western Switzerland Association of Certified Tax Experts
The Western Switzerland Association of Certified Tax Experts named in French Ordre Romand des Experts Fiscaux Diplômés (OREF) is a Swiss Association that was created in 1985 and that gathers approximately 250 members. The goals of the association are to promote and safeguard the profession, to defend the interests of its members and to defend the title of Certified Tax Expert in the French speaking part of Switzerland.
The Association is composed of the general assembly of members, of the committee, of the commission of seminars, of 6 cantonal sections (Fribourg, Geneva, Jura, Neuchâtel, Valais and Vaud) and of the OREF Prize.
All OREF active members are Certified Tax Experts who have successfully passed the exams organised by the Apex Body for the Superior Professional Tax Expert Exams and who are allowed to bear the title of Certified Tax Experts. Passing the tax expert exams certifies that the bearer has the highest level in Switzerland of professional education in the field of taxation.
The OREF commission of seminars organises high value and high quality seminars in the following areas: Swiss and international taxation, individual and corporate taxation, direct and indirect taxation.
All OREF members are also members of the Swiss Association of Certified Tax Experts (Association Suisse des Experts Fiscaux Diplômés – ASEFID) which is the apex association that gathers the French, German and Italian speaking Swiss certified tax experts. The ASEFID association currently has approximately 500 members.

History
Whether in a local or international context, taxation is of increasing importance for both business and personal matters. Given the degree of complexity relating to numerous tax issues, the necessity to implement high-level education and specific Swiss federal exams became pretty obvious. Therefore, in order to meet the increasing need of specialists, the Swiss Tax Expert Certificate was born in 1984.
The first French speaking Swiss Certified Tax Experts quickly felt the need to be represented and decided to create a professional association. This is how the Western Switzerland Association of Certified Tax Experts (OREF) was founded in 1985 in Lausanne.
Over the years, the activities and organisation of the Western Switzerland Association of Certified Tax Experts (OREF) evolved in order to meet the needs of our members and those of the community of tax advisors in Western Switzerland. From a pretty light organisation in the middle of the eighties, the OREF progressively converted to a dynamic professional association including the organisation of very high-level seminars, forming opinions on Swiss federal and cantonal tax legislation, particularly good relationships with the cantonal and federal tax authorities as well as common projects with other bodies such as The Swiss Institute of Certified Accountants and Tax Consultants, Educaris and all Universities of Western Switzerland. Also, since 2007, our association organises the OREF Prize which contributes to promote the contribution of scientific articles in French in the field of taxation.
The Western Switzerland Association of Certified Experts has many challenges in the coming years including the safeguard and positioning of the diploma taking into account new education in taxation on the market. One of the challenges that the committee members have accepted is to maintain the Certified Tax Expert Diploma at the peak of Swiss education in the field of taxation.
